Slip Dress Chronicles

Recently, in my online shopping endeavors, I decided to revisit an old-time favorite – Forever21. Forever21 was one of the first places that I ever shopped for plus-sized clothing. I guess you can say my plus-size coming of age! I enjoyed their clothing and was super impressed by their trendy clothing. I had not yet discovered sites like ASOS or even Target for that matter. But I definitely frequented Forever21’s plus-sized section. I had ordered things here or there but not at the rate of the other stores. HOWEVER, something told me to go on the app to peruse, and I am glad that I did. This dress screamed at me! I purchased it right away and so far absolutely no regrets!

Slip dresses have been on trend for a little while now, and they don’t seem to be going anywhere. There is so much versatility in a slip dress but also a sense of simplicity as well. You can wear it in so many ways, and you don’t need very much to look your best in these sorts of dresses. Throw on a pair of heels (if it is warm enough), and you have an effortlessly classy look. Slip dresses also provide a little sexy but like not anything overt. They often feature a slight dip in the neckline, which creates an excellent cleavage exposure that isn’t over the top. I’ve seen many styles of this dress; short, long, side-slits, dipped backs, and in a myriad of colors! I am officially dubbing slip dresses, a wardrobe MUST.

Plus-sized honeys, well honeys in general, when you rock this dress, do it with the utmost confidence. So, if that means wear shapewear, then wear it! I absolutely wore shapewear for this dress, and I am not ashamed. No, it isn’t tight, but I wanted it to look a certain way, and I accomplished that. Also, Happy Woman’s History Month! Last month I got to celebrate what it means to be black, and this month I’m celebrating what it means to be a woman. Remember, be unapologetically YOU. There is only one of you. Love the body that you were given and praise your flaws. Actually, I’m changing “flaws” to a unique blessing. Flaws implies that there is an imperfection, I know you are PERFECT. Being a woman is so unique and unappreciated in society at times. Be proud of who you are and flaunt it, not just this month, but every month.

Slip dress with a black turtleneck and black booties. Yes, I’m in uncomfortable shoes again. They are undeniably cute, and I don’t mind suffering (I’ll go get some Dr. Scholl’s inserts soon). Love this whole look, someone told me I looked like an artist that exudes good smells and good vibes. I’m happy with that!

Slip dress with a leather jacket and sandals. Alright, so the skinny on these shoes is; I’ve had them for about 3 years, and they are still in style. This is the effortless look I was talking about earlier. Throw on the dress, some cute heels, and a jacket, and you are looking like you put some real effort into your outfit.

Slip dress with a graphic t-shirt, Van sneakers, and a denim jacket. This jacket has honestly appeared all over my blog, it’s just that cute! But back to the dress. So versatile that you can throw anything under it or over it and have a whole new outfit. It’s like the ultimate repurpose-r.

A Letter to Teenage Shanice

Dear Teenage Shanice,

Hey girl! It’s me, adult Shanice. I just wanted to talk for a bit and let you in on some things that we learn as we grow up. Remember when we wanted to hit 24 so bad because we thought we would have our entire lives together by then. You thought you would be married with at least one child, dream house, dream car(s), dream spouse, and your dream job. You thought you would have everything figured out by the time you were 26, and I’m here to tell you, you do not. We just discovered how expensive toilet paper and paper towels are (don’t grow up). I’m sorry, I don’t mean to make your adult life sound so uninspiring! It is amazing, beautiful, confusing, and interesting all at the same time. I promise, by the end of this letter you will understand us even better.Read More »
